Adult Program: “Our Jewish Past in Postcards”
A presentation by Peretz member Judy Rosenthal.
Long before cell phones, email, text messages, Face Book, and Skype, picture postcards were all the rage. First issued around 1870 in Europe and the United States, they were not only a popular means of inexpensive communication but also collected and traded. Postcards with Jewish themes and images were printed in many countries, including the U.S., Germany, and Poland, and often featured holiday greetings written in Yiddish and English. They covered a wide range of Jewish topics, from Jewish festivals, shops, synagogues, cemeteries, and shtetl life, to Yiddish writers, views of Palestine, actors and actresses of the Yiddish theatre, and much more.
You are cordially invited to learn about Judy Rosenthal’s Jewish postcard collection and take a close look at the images, which will be displayed via a Power Point presentation. By means of these vintage postcards, which date back to the early 1900’s, you will find out about the history of postcards and postcards as collectibles, while taking a fascinating journey into our Jewish past.
