Janis Ian: Breaking Silence (Film and Online Discussion)

Please join us for our annual program in which we discuss films shown at the Rutgers Bildner Center Jewish Film Festival. We have chosen a film that is showing both in the theater and streaming, and during our online discussion, we’ll also talk about the other festival films that participants have seen.

About the Film
This inspiring documentary chronicles the acclaimed American singer-songwriter Janis Ian’s epic life journey beginning with her Jewish childhood on a chicken farm in New Jersey; her youthful struggle with notoriety following her first hit “Society’s Child” about an interracial love affair; her ascent to fame with the single “At Seventeen” about body shaming; and her pathbreaking album Breaking Silence about her lesbian identity. The film features Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Jean Smart and other stars.

To watch the film, either purchase tickets to see it in the theater on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00 pm; or purchase tickets to watch it online from November 18-21. Then register to join us for our online Zoom discussion on Friday, November 22, at 7:30 pm.

Please email the Program Planning Committee (Claudia Farber, Joyce Orenstein & Judy Stern) with your suggestions for speakers and/or programs, or to join our Committee and help plan our upcoming events!
