Albert Einstein: Champion of Racial Justice and Equality

The Peretz Program Planning Committee is sponsoring an online program with speakers Elizabeth Romanaux & Shirley Satterfield focusing on Albert Einstein. Please register for the program in advance of the event. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event.

When Albert Einstein moved to New Jersey in 1933, the press reported on everything he did — with one notable exception. The prejudiced media of the time did not mention Dr. Einstein’s deep friendships with and advocacy for African Americans, including W.E.B. DuBois and Paul Robeson. Find out about Einstein’s efforts to help achieve racial equity in America and about a new museum being developed in his honor.

Elizabeth Romanaux grew up in Princeton, NJ hearing many tales about Albert Einstein, who died the year she was born. To honor Dr. Einstein and his scientific and humanitarian legacies, she is currently spearheading a group that is developing a permanent Einstein Museum in Princeton. It is expected to open in 2028. Ms. Romanaux is a retired museum professional and a lifelong science nerd who loves to explain scientific ideas to others, something she particularly enjoyed doing while working at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ for 28 years. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and lives in Kingston, NJ.

Shirley Satterfield is a retired teacher, guidance counselor, historian, and founder of the Witherspoon-Jackson Historical and Cultural Society. Her family has lived in Princeton for six generations. All too aware of gentrification in Princeton’s traditionally African American neighborhood, Ms. Satterfield has spent years preserving and sharing the history of the area. She has the special distinction of having been a friend to Albert Einstein when she was a child, and can speak eloquently about the many ways Dr. Einstein helped her community.
