Our
Stokes camp-out weekend has traditionally been one of our school's most
popular events. It is a purely social family outing and helps to make
us a real community. It is strictly informal and unscheduled - a
weekend where we can "schmooze" with old and new friends, hike or
bike or take walks in the hills, swim, boat, and fish in the lake, and
RELAX. (Swimming and boating is dependent on getting lifeguards and is
usually available in the spring only).
The camp site is usually ours from Friday evening to Sunday 3:00 pm.
Food for Friday night is not included, so bring food for your family if you
plan to arrive on Friday before dinner time. (There are some fast-food
restaurants just a few miles before the camp-site before the intersection of Rts. 206 and 15).
The well-equipped camp kitchen with walk-in refrigerator makes food
preparation a convenient and fun group activity. Everyone helps and the
kitchen is always open. Snacks of fruit, cookies, and beverages are
available at all times.
Each cabin contains four bunk beds on each side of a two-sided
cabin. There is a door on each side. Cabins sleep two families,
one on each side, and we have several available. Bathrooms/showers are
on-site. Please bring flashlights, sleeping bags and/or blankets,
pillows, towels, soap, etc. You are also encouraged to bring any type
of musical instruments, song books, fishing gear, and
athletic equipment. Board games are an especially good idea for the
evening or foul weather, but beware - our school has a resident board game
wizard who will take on all challengers.
The cost of the weekend is as follows:
- $70 per adult (12 and
up) for the weekend; that price includes three meals on Saturday and two
on Sunday plus lodging.
- $60 per child ages 4 -
12.
- $36 per adult (12 and
up) for Saturday only. That price includes lunch and dinner.
- $30 per child ages
4-12 for Saturday only.
- Free for children 0-3.
- All prices include the
cost of lifeguards for swimming and boating.
Guests
are welcome. (It will be the responsibility of the inviting person to
collect applicable charges from their guests.)
Pets are forbidden, and liquor is not sanctioned.
Please email Joel Cantor or
call him at 732-549-1970 as soon as you know if you can join us, so we can
figure out what food supplies you will be responsible for bringing.
Stokes
is at the Linley G. Cook 4H Camp - Stokes State Forest.
From Rte 287 North:
Take Rte 206 North through Chester and Newton.
About 5 miles past Newton will be the intersection of Rte 15 and Rte 206.
Make a left, which will have you continuing on Rte 206.
(Alternatively, you can take Rte 80 West to Rte 15, which will
intersect with Rte 206 as described above. If you are approaching this
intersection from Rte 15, continue straight onto Rte 206.)
Approximately 6 miles after this intersection will be a sign on the right
for the Stokes Forest Administrative building. On your left there may
be a sign for the New Jersey 4H Camp. Go slowly near the 6 mile
point as the signs are small and hard to see at night.
The left turn leading to the camp will be Struble
Road, which will wind through the forest for about 3 miles. The Camp is
on the right, accessed by a marked driveway coming off of Struble.
Once you are there, you can drop off your food at the main building, which
will be on the lake on your left. Cabins are scattered around the
grounds and are on a first-come first-serve basis.
