Adult Program: “From Shtetl
Tochters to Ghetto Girls: The Transformation of
Jewish Women on the Lower East Side” – A presentation by Leslie Fishbein, Ph.D.,
Associate
Professor, American Studies and Jewish Studies at Rutgers
University.
Life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe prepared Jewish women well
for life in the New World. In the shtetls they worked to support their families, spoke
the native language as well as Yiddish, were familiar with the
marketplace and interacted with gentiles.
This lecture explores how in America these women profited from enhanced
economic opportunities but suffered greater instability in their personal
lives. 8 PM at the Reformed
Church of Highland Park, 19-21 S. 2nd Ave., Highland Park.
This program
is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council
for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the
Humanities.

Program: “From Shtetl to Swing” - Fleeing persecution
in Russia and Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1924, more than 2.5 million
Jews left their small towns, or shtetls, behind
and embarked for a new land -- America.
A host of kids from New York City's Lower East Side -- Irving
Berlin, George Gershwin, Sophie Tucker, Molly Picon,
Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, The Marx Brothers, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw,
and many others -- grew up to capitalize on a vast heritage of Yiddish
music and culture, taking 20th-century American entertainment on a
musical joyride. Hosted by actor
and playwright Harvey Fierstein, written and
directed by Fabienne Rousso-Lenoir,
the documentary film, “From Shtetl to Swing”
tells the story of the cross-pollination of Jewish and African-American
musical influences, two traditions born out of exile and longing, yet
charged with an energy and freedom that gave voice to a new multicultural
America. 10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

Adult Program:
“Women, Jews, and Art” – A presentation by Professor Judith
Brodsky. In the fall of 2010, the
Jewish Museum mounted an exhibition of work by women artists called
Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism. The commonly held belief is
that there is no Jewish art because of the stricture against graven
images. Actually there is Jewish
art of many different kinds depending on the era and the geography. Today, after a generation of Jewish
artists like Mark Rothko or Barnet Newman who shied away from any Jewish
imagery, many in the contemporary generation, particularly Jewish women
artists, embrace Jewish imagery as a primary source of content. It's a fascinating reversal. In this talk, Judith Brodsky, professor
emerita, Department of Visual Arts, Mason Gross
School of the Arts, founding director of the Brodsky Center for
Innovative Editions at Rutgers as well as co-founder of the Rutgers
Institute for Women and Art, will show images of art by contemporary
Jewish women artists and explain the origins of their involvement in
their Jewish heritage. 8 PM at the Reformed

Best known for "Drinking Liberally" happy hours, Living
Liberally has been featured in the New York Times, lampooned on The Daily

kitchen serving meals to a multi-program agency that helps move people

train people and employ people in the work of ending hunger. The agency’s
mission is simple: to empower lives, invite justice, and alleviate
